Last night I tried to get into Second Life ™ to do some work — yup, on a Friday Night — I have no life!
I kept knocking, but could not get in.
So I went over to the SL Blog a read:
[7:31 PM] We are experiencing various inworld issues at this time, such as region down, logins failure, transactions, teleporting, timeouts on the webpage etc. We are aware of this problem and are working to resolve this as quickly as possible. Please refrain from any transactions at this time, as possible.
This went on all night so I gave up around 9pm and went a geeked out on Battlestar Gallatica.
Got up today and found this
[06:57 AM 04/05/08] Our ISP seems to have ongoing difficulties which are resulting in recurring network issues again. This is causing previously reported in-world problems again. We are working with the network engineers to resolve. – Matthew
[06:10 AM 04/05/08] Most of the aftermath has been cleared away. We are still seeing a small number of regions struggling to come back online, and will update you once we have them up and running again. -Lotte
[05:20 AM 04/05/08] Unfortunately, connected to the earlier described problems with our ISP, we are getting reports of failing inworld services again. We are working to get it fixed again, and will keep you updated here. -Lotte
[9:38 PM] We are continuing to work with the service provider, we will keep you posted as the details come in.
[8:34 PM] We have investigated network issues and determined connectivity issues with one of our service providers. Contact has been made and they are working to resolve this.
and a second blog entry (you know it is bad when there are two postings on the same issue):
[08:30 AM] Our Ops team is still working with the technicians from our ISP to fix the networking problems. Stay tuned for updates! -Lotte
[07:30AM 04/05/08] It seems the problem is even harder to nail down than we earlier supposed. We need to close logins again to go back to diagnostics. -Lotte
[3.30 AM] [RESOLVED] – The doors are open and we are back. It turned out there were multiple issues with our ISPs network which have been worked around for now. The network provider is working to resolve the issue permanently – Matthew
[2.30 AM] Folks, it’s been a rough night so far and we apologise for the lack of service right now.
Like most network providers today, the ISPs who provide bandwidth for Second Life actually bundle many network links into large virtual links between their data centers. Traffic for many customers then flows across these bundles. Starting at approximately 19:30 PST, some of the special routing that handles aggregation of these bundles at the ISP level malfunctioned causing us severe packet loss of over 50% on the portion of traffic going to Linden Lab’s data centers. We had no option but to disable logins.
Since this is a highly unusual failure, it’s been complex and time consuming to diagnose. We are working with our network provider’s engineers towards a solution and will be back up just as soon as we can.

So all of the work I had planned to get done before Monday is now in trouble. Ah the life of a metaverse developer.
