Mega Prims on the Loose in Second Life

May 15th, 2008 · No Comments

For all of the builders in Second Life®, the last few days have been just like Christmas. Presents flying back and forth of Mega Prims. New and more complicated builds are being planned. Giddy mayhem is in the air. Mega prims – we adore you.

Resident builders, especially those with private sims, are helping each other out. “Do you have these type of mega prims? Here have them!” Oh the joy.

Now for those of you not familiar with the term “Mega Prim” may not be aware of the joy that is currently happening in SL. A Mega Prim is a prim (bulding block) that is larger than Second Life would normally allow to be created. While a regular prim – the Second Life equivalent of a building block – cannot exceed ten metres on any axis, MegaPrims can be many times that size, even hundreds of metres.

MegaPrims are rumored to cause degenerate behavior in the Second Life simulator code, and cause unusual problems for regions, though only Linden Lab knows the specifics of any difficulties that MegaPrims cause.

While it is my understanding that mega prims are still not permitted for use on mainland simulators and are only allowable on private estates, it has been my practice not to use them on any of my client builds.

But this latest rush of mega prims appears to be a bug which Andrew Linden confirmed when he said that the disabling of megaprim constraints was a bug, and is to be fixed. I assume that this particular hack will be closed in the current new rollout, though Linden Lab has yet to make any official statement or to respond to any queries.

So enjoy your mega prims while you can! :)
