I am adding a new category today called Time Suck.
We all have Time Sucks. They are the things that we do that suck up time, whether it be MMORPGs or You Tube or just watching the idiot box or whatever.
Last year, I kept a log about all of my activities in the month of May. I found that I was spending over 10 hours a week producing a podcast at the same time when I was needing to get more billable hours, so I had to end the podcast.
This year, I have done the same exercise. From April 20 through May 20, I tracked my time on a weekly basis and came up with the following:
In an average 168 hour week (7 days x 24 hours):
- 73.5 hours - working (average 10.50 hours per day) - 43.6% of my time
- 36.5 hours - sleep (average 5.21) - 21.7%
- 8.5 hours - eating / cooking / dishes (average 1.21) - 5.1%
- 7.5 hours - reading blogs / writing / internet (average 1.07) - 4.5%
- 7.0 hours - shopping / travel (average 1.00) - 4.1%
- 5.5 hours - H3 / entertainment (average 0.79) - 3.3%
- 5.5 hours - exercise / walking dog (average 0.79) - 3.3%
- 4.5 hours - house chores (average 0.64) - 2.7%
- 4.5 hours - reading personal emails / writing / twitter / texting (average 0.64) - 2.7%
- 4.0 hours - MMORPG (average 0.57) - 2.4%
- 3.5 hours - self grooming / laundry (average 0.5) - 2.1%
- 3.0 hours - TV (Battlestar!) (average 0.43) - 1.8%
- 4.5 hours - misc (average 0.64) - 2.7%
Things I notice:
- I am trying only to work 6 days a week right now, so I am averaging 12.25 hours of work per day. There is no way I am going to increase that amount without blowing a gasket. The addition of Jen and Dave to Meta Magic Studio has been great. I have been able to off load items and the keep me energized.
- Since I work most days in my home office, I have no commute time.
- Currently I am not watching much TV but that changes during football season. I spend all day Sunday in front to my six screens. I have found that I watch The Big Bang Theory and 30 Rock on the internet now, but I still like to watch Battlestar on TV.
- I should be putting in at least another 2 hours a week on the house.
- I spend way to much time on personal emails, then again, I don’t talk on cell phones.
- My better half and I like to go out for Saturday breakfast. That eats up 1 1/2 hours.
- I need to get at least 1 hour a day of exercise. I am now riding my bike to the store, so that should help there.
- Misc includes Mother In Law and other family duties.
