My “Home” Office

June 4th, 2008 · No Comments

My home office is where I spend the majority of my time working, only using the Meta Magic Studio office about 4 hours a week. I love my 12 step commute! I have been doing it for over five years and it is easy, stress free and green friendly!

The design of my home office is the typical geek unplanned mess that I have been needing to address for over a year now. Currently I run three desk top computers and I have a lap top that I use for travel.

What I need to do is add a second seating to the office while adding some storage space and freeing up my couch which is currenly acting as a storage area.

What I envision is expanding my desk so that two people can sit comfortably. One computer will be placed in that spot for the book keeping tasks. Then in my main seating, I will have three main screens, two 18″ flat screen monitor with one 22″ flat screen in the middle. As part of the new desltop, I want a small storage shelf that the monitors will rest on. Above the monitors will be additional shelving to store all the important items that are currently sitting on the useless office couch.

So all I need to do is buy a nice piece of hard wood that has a length of 84 inches, cover it with glass and then bring in some shelving. I will also need to purchase anouther 18 inch screen and a computer.

Ok - I admit it, I just want another computer.

Note - I have been asked about my computers - here is what I am running.

The main computer is a HP Pavilion Media Center PC M8100n which is loaded with an AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core Processor 5600+ 2.80 Ghz, 3070 MB of RAM, a NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GTS graphics card and 500 GB Hard Drive. It is about 1 years old, having been purchased in July 2007. I run Vista on it and it is used for the majority of development projects.

My second computer is a Dell Inspiron with Intel Core 2 Duo Processor, 2 GB Memory, a NVIDIA GeForce 5600 GTS graphics card and 320 GB Hard Drive. It is about 15 months old. I run Vista on it and this computer is used as a back up for development, plus I monitor all of my email and skype and run Second Life on it.

The third computer is a very old Dell Dimension running a Pentium 4 CPU 2.40 GHz with 512 MB RAM and its video card is NVIDIA GeForce4 MX 420. This computer is used mainly for testing graphic speed testing / verification and is used for book keeping. It’s hard drive is only 55 GB big, but all of the data is kept on the back up Seagate Hardrive. I run Windows XP Service Pack 2 on it.

Each computer has a Seagate FreeAgent Drive with 232 GB of capacity for weekly back up.

My beloved laptop is a Dell Inspiron16400 with an Intel Core 2 CPU, 2.00 GB of RAM, ATI Mobility Radeon X1400 graphics card and 100 GB Hard Drive. It is used mostly for travel and presentations.

So I have decided to add a fourth computer to the home office. This one is all about graphihcs and speed.
