At 10:45 am today, receieved an email from Linden Lab:
Hi Guy,
We’re contacting you about your use of the name SL Brand. As you know, you’ll need to change the name to comply with our trademark policy at http://secondlife.com/corporate/brand/trademark/. The name SL Brand — indicating Second Life Brand — is extremely likely to create confusion about whether your services are provided or sponsored by Linden Lab. We can’t have that.
We gave Residents 90 days to make changes to comply with the trademark policy, and the 90 days are now up. Could you please let us know where you’re at with making changes?
We’ll need a schedule from you for your migration to a new name. We suggest something like the following:
(1) By July 18, 2008 — You notify us of a new name for your business and domain name that does not include “SL” or any of our other trademarks.
Please note that you cannot use any name that includes “SL” for services that you provide for other virtual worlds. Your website indicates that you provide metaverse consulting and development services. So we strongly recommend that you develop your own independent brand name and do not use our license to use “SL” with a brand name at http://secondlife.com/corporate/brand/trademark/sl_insl.php.
The benefit of having your own brand name that does not use “SL” is that you can use this brand name for other virtual worlds. In addition, if you have your own independent brand name without “SL,” you can obtain trademark protection for that name. We do not allow Residents to claim trademark rights to any name that includes “SL” or any of our other trademarks.
(2) By August 1, 2008 — You update your business name in your website graphics, design, and other branding on your website at slbrand.com. And, you announce your new name to all of your customers.
(3) By August 18, 2008 — You launch your new site at your new domain name. You forward all traffic from your existing domain name (slbrand.com) to your new domain name.
(4) By November 17, 2008 — You stop forwarding from and using your existing domain name (slbrand.com).
This kind of schedule will allow your business to make a smooth transition to a new name.
Please let us know what your plans are for moving to a new name as soon as possible. If you have any questions, please let us know that too.
Best regards,
Linden Lab’s Trademark Team
My response:
We are changing our name to Meta Magic Studio
Website url has been purchased
We have changed all in world naming to Meta Magic Studio on our sim Los Arboles
SL Brand web site will forward to Meta Magic Studio until the on year pre-paid hosting ends
We have informed out major clients, which include Cisco Systems and Credit SuisseWE ARE NOT HAPPY WITH LINDEN LAB
I could have written more, but I am so tired of the arrogance of Linden Lab. THIS WHOLE ISSUE SHOULD HAVE BEEN HANDLED MORE PROFESSIONALLY BY THEM.

this is precisely the part that I do not understand about the whole trademark imbrolgio — it would seem to me that LL would WANT the brand recogniztion that a business like SL Brand company has brought?
bloody narrow-minded incomprehension of the value of branding and viral marketing, IMNSHO
