Have you ever had the experience of getting incorrect change back? Whether it is a pub, bar, restaurant, Quickie-Mart, or any establishment that deals in cash, giving the correct change back is paramount. And it is not that hard to do correctly!
Yet over the past two days, I have had incorrect change given to me three times. The first time was at a local pub, the second at the local Safeway grocery store and just ten minutes ago it happened at a local sandwich shop. Each time, the clerk just handed me back some cash without counting it which always put my “cash” radar on alert.
Ever since I was 15 working at Cherry Chase Liquors in Sunnyvale, CA, I was given instructions on how to correctly give change. It is not that hard. Take whatever bill you are given, do not put in the till until the transaction is complete (and the customer looks satisfied), count up from the amount of the bill to the amount given when making change (never subtract), then count out the change to the customer.
Yet the last three incorrect transactions the clerk did not count out the change.
Now did they mean to short change me? In all three cases, the clerks looked completely embarrassed about the issues so I am giving all three the reason of doubt. If they had looked pissed, then I would be more inclined to believe it was intentional.
But jeez, how hard is it to give the correct change?
