Back in April 2005, I started my first podcast. At the time, I knew little about sound quality, production and RSS feeds, but that did not stop me. Nor did a lack of “proper” equipment, in which I mean a studio microphone or mixers. But via the power of the Internet, I was able to piece together enough free software to produce a show.
This first show was called the ON ON Cast – Radio for Halfminds. It’s subject and target audience was a group of people called Hash House Harriers. Each tweny-minute show featured interviews / bar ramblings, so-called comedy and songs that this group knew. I produced about 4 to 8 shows a month and within six months I had about 200-250 listeners per show. I ended the show in May of 2006, having completed 70 shows and feeling good about it but realizing that there were other opportunities to pursue with my limited time.
My next podcast started in June of 2006 and was called The Goddess and Banana. This show was partner show that I, in my Banana Stein persona, did with Yxes Delacroix. The main story line centered around our adventures in Second Life. I have envisioned it to be a combination of comedy and travel. It turned out to be so much more.
For the next year, we produced two to three shows a week, featuring all sorts of activities in this virtual world. Our largest show download count was just over 1,000. But despite the rapid growth in Second Life during the fall of 2006, the show was not capturing any where near the growth that it should have been. I chalked it up to podcasting and virtual worlds not automatically equating to listeners. The show ended about 1 year after starting due mainly to a lack of time to dedicate to this project.
Since June of 2007, I have had the podcast bug but I neither had the time, nor did I think I really had the energy. But over the last year, the bug to get back has really been getting to me.
Many of my Hash House Harriers friends have been asking about a new ON ON Cast but part of me does not want to limit myself just to the world of hashing. I think it might be more fun and entertaining if I included my whole Bananaverse into the show. I think it might be fun to interview some of the people I hang out with in virtual worlds, as well as the people in the physical world.
So stay tuned….
