My wife and I have lived in our house for over 15 years and while we attempt to take care of it as much as possible, time has taken its toll on the house. Originally built in the 1930s, our fisherman’s cottage style home had a major update in 1994 right before we bought it. At that time, a new kitchen was added to the back of house along with a 1/2 bath. Currently it remains a two bedroom house, with 1 1/2 baths and laundry area, plus a detached garage which is called the Dude Shack.
Today with meet with Tony our contractor and started the process of the remodel. Currently we have a couple of different options we are looking at from just refurbishing the existing layout all the way to building a larger back area which is my preference. All depends on the dollars needed.
I am excited to get this project kicked off and now is a great time due to slow down in work both for me and the construction guys.
Looks like we will be at least doing the following:
Living Room
- Strip, sand and redo wood floors
- Replace / repair all windows
- New paint
- New light fixture
- Refurbish front door
Dinning Room
- Strip, sand and redo wood floors
- Replace / repair all windows
- New paint
- New light fixture
Main Bath
- New shower stall
- New flooring – looking at some stone
- New sink and fixtures
- New Paint
Kitchen
We are looking at a couple of options here. Since all of the appliances are only 1 year old, we are in good shape there. But the floor needs to be ripped out completely and all of the cabinets must go. This area will be the most extensive area to work on.
Highlights include new cabinets, stone slab counters, vaulted ceiling with skylights, an eating area and more.
Garage
The heart and soul of the house as far as all of the sports fans care. We are looking at adding five to ten feet in length and five feet in width to it. That should give me plenty of room for all my future needs.
I am thinking about moving my office into the garage. It will give me lots of flexibility plus it frees up the home office to house guests easier. Currently when a house guest visits, I end up laptopping it for a few days. Plus my desk in the office just can not fit all of the monitors I need.
Landscaping
All lawns must go! Everything will be planted will be drought tolerant. Plus we will be adding a cooking area, seating area and a fern garden. New driveway.
Basically the only rooms not being touched are both bedrooms and the hallway since they were upgraded about two years ago.
So that is were we are at as of Sunday, June 7, 2009. I will be taking pictures soon to document the whole process.
