Cisco Systems ends Second Life effort

Cisco Systems SL Virtual Campus

I have not seen any official announcement from Cisco System (virtual world blog) and I DO NOT have any inside knowledge, but it looks like Cisco has ended it Second Life effort completely.

I got a message from Mike Jordan, aka Mirror Twin, on Sunday night saying that he had attempted to visit the four public sims of Cisco but they were not there.  I checked in late last night into Second Life, and he was correct.  Not only are the four public sims gone, but their two private sims are no longer around.

Bitter sweet is how I feel.  There is so much potential in interactive 3D worlds, but it requires money and effort.  If Cisco Systems is not willing, who will?

Since I had worked on Cisco Systems SL campus from its inception (launched Dec 2006), all the way through its last event July 1, 2009, I felt very connected to this world.  The lessons learned, the interaction, the combination of real world and virtual world presentations, and so much more were pursued.  Now who will remember?

I am very sad to read this news. Though I only worked on a few projects, I felt so proud of the work.

Once again I want to thank you for the opportunity to work in virtual world development.
