Our first pass with a landscaper did not goes as well I as I had hoped. The original intent of our front yard planting was to be “minimal maintenance.” Yet it seems that a few steps were forgotten by the orginal landscaper. They forgot / neglected / or did not know about putting down cheese cloth or cardboard to help elimnate weeds.
During the design phase, I remember Jerrob talking about placing carboard, but it did not happen during the installation. While I do not blame Terra Nova for this issue (I blame myself), it amazes me that a landscape company did not mention this during the installation. Unfortunately Terra Nova may have grown to big as a company because the quality of their work is not up to where their reputation claims it to be. There is no way I am going with them to plant the back of the house.
So we have a new plan for the back. I will be hiring separate people for the deck, flagstone, fireplace and planting.
So now we are starting over with Tabby Gardens, and seeing how their service is before proceeding. Tina from Tabby came in with a reasonable service quote and a plan to rework the front yard.
The plan is simple but labor intensive:
- Remove weeds.
- Rake up sections of bark ground cover, place down cardboard ground cover to help elimnate weeeds.
- Rake back the bark ground cover .
- Trim and groom 6 rose plants that were not installed correctly.
As always, I will keep you posted.
UPDATE: 4 pm
Tina spent almost five hour working on the front yard. She did an incredible amount of work. The roses are finally “free” from their straps; they should have been unwrapped during installation. They are looking much nicer now that they are “open” and they will be “trained” to grow along the picket fence. We also have an aphid infestation – great
Overall the yard looks much better. All the weeds got pulled, all 91 plants got some tender loving care and the old vines growing on the fence on living room side got trimmed.
Next up is the cardboard installation which begins in about two weeks during her next visit.
