My last living grandparent is Rita Schilling. She is 97 years young as I write this. She is about 4 foot 10 inches tall. She weighs less than nothing. And she is a true lady.
I had a great visit with her on Sunday, July 18, 2010 at her “studio” in Laguna Woods. While the visit was not a long as I would have liked, every moment spent with her was special and informative.
I learned that she is happy about being 97, and she is a bit amazed by being “so old.” Though I really worry about her being alone, she tells me that my Uncle Greg visits her regularly. It has to be hard on her since Grandpa passed away approximately two years ago.
I did learn a new part of my family history that I did not know. It turns out that one of her younger brothers (one of the twins) survived the attack in Pearl Harbor. He was stationed on a ship next to the USS Arizona. His brother (the other twin) had been involved in the D-Day landings. (I have an article on this one!)
As we were talking, we made plans for her 100th birthday celebration. She made me a promise that she would make it, and then dryly inquired if “it will be ok if I go the next day, right?” We both broke out laughing.
Love ya grandma!
